Going to ALA Annual? Attend my cover letter workshop!

I will be presenting a cover letter writing workshop at the ALA JobLIST Placement Center, Sunday June 30 from 1pm – 2:30pm. If you’re interested in attending, mark yourself on the scheduler.

They say that a good cover letter can be the difference between a search committee reading your resume or throwing it into the “no” pile. This workshop will use examples of successful cover letters and a series of exercises to inspire job seekers to write cover letters that showcase their skills and enthusiasm, and help their applications rise to the top. Feel free to bring copies of job postings and cover letters that you have used in the past.

I hope to meet many of you in person in Chicago!

-Steve

Going to ALA ’12? Attend OpenCoverLetters LIVE! Sunday June 24

If you’re going to ALA in this month, please consider attending a session I’m co-presenting with my friend and fellow librarian, and podcaster, Emily Thompson.

WHEN: Sunday, June 24, 2012 – 2:45pm to 3:30pm PST
LOCATION: Anaheim Convention Center 208A
DESCRIPTION: They say that a good cover letter can be the difference between a hiring manager reading your resume or throwing it into the “no” pile. In this workshop panelists who were hired within six months of graduation after extensive national job hunts will share how they learned to write cover letters that lead to interviews. Participants should bring a copy of a job posting and a draft of their cover letter. After a brief introduction, they will break into groups and critique each others’ letters with the goal of writing cover letters that will help their application rise to the top.

Speakers:
– Emily Thompson, Learning Technologies Librarian, Penfield Library, SUNY Oswego (Co-host of LiTTech podcast on EdReach.us) – @librarianofdoom
– Stephen Flynn, Emerging Technologies Librarian, Andrews Library, College of Wooster (founder of OpenCoverLetters.com) – @sxflynn

Vote for Open Cover Letters workshop at ALA Annual!

I, along with Emily Thompson, Learning Technologies Librarian @ SUNY Oswego have applied for an ALA Conversation Starter, “OpenCoverLetters LIVE!: Writing a cover letter that will get you noticed.”

Description:

They say that a good cover letter can be the difference between a hiring manager reading your resume or throwing it into the “no” pile. In this workshop panelists who were hired within six months of graduation after extensive national job hunts will share how they learned to write cover letters that lead to interviews. Participants should bring a copy of a job posting and a draft of their cover letter. OpenCoverLetters.com posts real cover letters from hired librarians and archivists. We hope that by doing a live session, we can help job seekers improve their applying skills.
